Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community
The Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is a sovereign tribe located in the metropolitan Phoenix area. This community is symbolized through its great seal, the "Man In Maze." The legend depicts the experiences that occur during the journey through the maze of life and how each person can discover a physical, mental, social and spiritual balance.
With two distinct backgrounds and cultures, the Community is comprised of two Native American tribes: the Pima, "Akimel O'Odham" (River People) and the Maricopa, "Xalychidom Piipaash" (People who live toward the water).
Historically, the Pima are decendants of the Hohokam people who farmed the Salt River Valley and created an elabroate canal irrigation system centuries ago. In contrast, the Maricopa originally lived along the lower Gila and Colorado Rivers and migrated toward Pima villages in 1825.
Today, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community is partners with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies and is host to a Major League Baseball spring training facility on Community land. It is the first Major League Baseball spring training facility to be built on Indian land in the nation.
