Governor Napolitano Announces $1.5 Million in Tourism Matching Grants
June 07, 2007
AOT Director Margie A. Emmermann joined Governor Napolitano in recognizing the recipients of AOTs Teamwork for Effective Arizona Marketing (TEAM) grants, a program that enables communities and organizations throughout Arizona to promote their tourism offerings. TEAM grants fund advertising, public relations campaigns, research and strategic planning and other tourism-related marketing.
The grants are awarded to communities, regional tourism partnerships, tribal entities and statewide associations that meet the program requirements and are able to match the requested funds. Forty-seven communities, including six Native American organizations, will be impacted by the grant awards, which range from $1,824 to $130,000. The total amount of TEAM grant award monies to be distributed for fiscal year 2008 is $1,536,365.
"The tourism industry is a vital component of the state's economy," said Governor Napolitano. "By providing communities and tribes the financial support and marketing resources to attract visitors to our state, the TEAM grant program is truly an investment in Arizona's economic future."
All applicants must attend one of the TEAM workshops held statewide by AOT to gain eligibility. The workshops educate the participants on developing a marketing plan with measurable results and writing an effective grant application. AOT also encourages organizations to create regional partnerships, making them eligible for more TEAM grant funding.
"The TEAM Grant Program has been an extremely valuable tool for the Graham County Chamber of Commerce and has allowed us to better market our region," said Sheldon Miller, Director of the Graham County Chamber of Commerce. "This past year we used the TEAM grant program to develop a new tourism product called The Salsa Trail, which highlights many of our region's Mexican restaurants. We designed a Salsa Trail brochure and other collateral material for this new culinary tourism effort. Without the TEAM Grant and the Arizona Office of Tourism this new tourism product could not have been developed."

Created as an executive agency in 1975, the Arizona Office of Tourism is charged with enhancing the state economy and the quality of life for all Arizonans by expanding travel activity and increasing related revenues through tourism promotion and development. AOT works to serve the Grand Canyon States travel industry and related businesses, the traveling public, and the taxpayers of Arizona.
