Ajo Attractions

Ajo is a great place to hike, take photos or bring your paints and let your brush take over. Are you a history buff? Ajo has 158 years of history to share with you – including our lookout over the open pit copper mine, which stretches more than 1.5 miles across, or our museum, where history is right at your fingertips. When you're ready to relax, Ajo is also the perfect place to simply sit back and enjoy the quiet.

Come stay in one of Ajo's bed and breakfasts or wonderful motels – each with a pool to cool you off after an invigorating desert hike. Then head out to one of the town's many wonderful places to dine, where there's always a seat saved just for you.

Ajo History & Culture

Full of old-fashioned charm, Ajo's history dates back to the mid-1800s, when early miners built the Arizona Territory's first copper mine here. Today, you can still enjoy the town's historic architecture, including a Spanish Colonial plaza from the early 1900s – now the perfect place to shop, enjoy an ice cream cone and listen in to the voices of yesterday.
