Clarkdale Attractions
Back in 1912, Clarkdale was Arizona's first planned community, and the town still retains much of its historical appearance and character. Sidewalks invite strollers to peruse neighborhoods where many of the houses bear plaques stating the date of building and other facts. The centrally located Chamber of Commerce info caboose can direct visitors to local restaurants, hiking along the Verde River and in Sycamore Canyon, and to Tuzigoot National Monument, a lovely remnant of the Sinaguan Culture. Clarkdale is also home to the Verde Canyon Railroad, Arizona's longest-running nature show, which carries passengers into a pristine wilderness canyon year-round.
Clarkdale History & Culture
Originally a “company town,” Clarkdale was founded by the United Verde Copper Company to provide housing and services for the employees of their copper smelter. The extensive smelter complex processed copper ore that was brought down from Jerome from 1913 to 1953. Unlike other company towns of the period, Clarkdale was designed and built from a unified master plan. The main town site was located on a ridge overlooking the industrial smelter complex and was developed with residential homes, a commercial area, an administrative center, schools, recreational and cultural facilities and parks. They intended to include all the parts typically found in a small town within a comprehensive planned design. The original town site of Clarkdale is recognized as an Historic District on the National Register of Historic Places. Clarkdale is also home to the Yavapai-Apache Nation.
