Small Scale Skirmishes: Battles from Imagination and Reality

 The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures in Tucson, Arizona will open a new temporary exhibit; Small Scale Skirmishes: Battles from Imagination and Reality on Tuesday, January 22, 2013. The exhibit highlights the many different ways miniatures have been used for military re-enactment and play, focusing on toy soldiers, wargaming figures and dioramas. The exhibit will be open through Sunday, April 7, 2013.
 
The toy soldiers in this exhibit run the gamut from vintage to contemporary- intended for play and display. Ignited by the publishing of H.G. Wells' book Little Wars in 1913, tabletop battles have grown from childhood play into wargames for adults that necessitate rules, strategy and a referee. According to Greg Hundt, a wargaming aficionado, "Wargaming is like a more complicated version of chess, based on historical facts." The subject matter for wargaming has expanded since the 1970s to include fantasy. The wargaming figures in this exhibit will be both historical and imaginary. The dioramas in Small Scale Skirmishes will allow viewers to experience historical battles as well as fictional battles from pop culture.
 
The exhibit will feature work from ten local artisans. Throughout the course of the exhibit, the museum will be offering outreach presentations, lectures, demonstrations and classes related to the topic.
