LPGA Legends Return to Sun City West for Walgreens Charity Classic in February
The Legends Tour, the official senior tour of the LPGA, announced it will return to Sun City West for the second annual Walgreens Charity Classic to be played at Grandview Golf Course, 14260 Meeker Blvd. Tournament dates are set for Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 23-24, 2013, with the official event pro-am on Friday, Feb. 22.
A field of 40 LPGA Legends will compete for a $225,000 purse and is expected to include several LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famers as well as defending champion Rosie Jones, a fan favorite who won 13 times on the LPGA Tour and has recorded five wins on The Legends Tour since teeing it up in her first Legends event five years ago. The Legends Tour was started in 2000 and has hosted events in over a dozen different states as well as Japan and Australia.
“We are very excited to be coming back to Sun City West to compete in this terrific event that Walgreens is title sponsoring,” said Jane Blalock, CEO of the Legends Tour and 27-time LPGA Tour champion. “We had an incredible turnout of fans last year and we are really looking forward to playing Grandview again. Walgreens is a great partner and together we are really pleased to be returning to such a wonderful golf community.”
Last year’s event drew upwards of 6,000 Sun City West area residents and Legends fans on the weekend and showcased four LPGA and World Golf Hall of Famers, including Pat Bradley, JoAnne Carner, Betsy King and Hollis Stacy. The talent-packed list of players also included 16 past Legends Tour champions, 5 former Solheim Cup captains and four of the five career money leaders on The Legends Tour. In total, the field had combined for over 350 wins on the LPGA Tour.
“We expect an even better field for next year’s event in February,” remarked Blalock. “The word is out now about how great it is to play the Walgreens in Sun City West.” With the tournament coming earlier in the year, event organizers expect larger crowds. Ticket prices will likely be the same, with a special discount for Sun City West Recreation Centers members. All proceeds will once again support Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Nearly $40,000 was raised for PCH through the 2012 tournament.
